When a child struggles in one subject, the advice from relatives is usually the same: "Get a tuition teacher." But a tutor who is excellent for maths may not be right for English, and a strong Class 12 Physics teacher may not be patient enough for a Class 5 child. The subject, the level and the real problem should decide who you choose. This guide goes subject by subject, so you know what to look for in an online tutor before you book a single class.
Start with the real problem, not just the subject
"Weak in maths" can mean very different things: missing basics from earlier classes, careless mistakes, fear of word problems, or simply not practising enough. Before you search, look at two or three recent test papers and note where marks were lost. Share these with the tutor. A good tutor will read them before deciding where to start.
A subject-by-subject guide to choosing a tutor
Mathematics
Maths builds on itself, so gaps from earlier classes often show up later. Look for a tutor who checks basics first instead of jumping straight to the current chapter. In the demo, notice whether they make your child solve, not just watch. For senior classes, ask about experience with your board's question pattern. Browse online Mathematics tutors.
Science: Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Up to Class 8, one Science tutor can usually handle all three. From Class 9, the subjects get more specialised:
Physics: look for clear explanation of concepts before formulas, and lots of numerical practice.
Chemistry: a good tutor connects reactions to patterns, so students are not just memorising.
Biology: look for a tutor who uses diagrams and helps the student write precise answers.
English and other languages
School English needs grammar, reading comprehension and writing practice, with feedback on real answers. Spoken English is different: the student should be speaking for most of the session, not listening. For Hindi, choose a tutor who knows your board's literature and grammar syllabus. For IELTS, ask how the tutor practises speaking and writing under exam conditions.
Commerce: Accountancy and Economics
Accountancy is mostly about practice and format. Look for a tutor who gives many problems and checks presentation, because marks depend on it. For Economics, a tutor who uses everyday examples makes theory easier to remember.
Social Science
History, Geography, Civics and Economics reward understanding and good answer-writing. A good Social Science tutor uses maps, timelines and stories, and teaches students how to structure long answers.
Computer Science and coding
For school Computer Science, the tutor should know your board's language, such as Python or Java. For coding beyond school, ask what the student will actually build in the first month. Learning by building is far better than watching someone else type.
Competitive exams: JEE, NEET and more
Exam tutors need two things: deep subject knowledge and an understanding of the exam pattern. Ask how they handle doubts, how often they test, and how they analyse mistakes. Browse IIT-JEE tutors and NEET tutors. Our guide Best Online Tutoring Platform for Students in India covers boards and exams in more detail.
Match the tutor to the class level
Classes 1 to 5: patience, warmth and short, activity-based sessions matter most. One tutor for several subjects is fine.
Classes 6 to 8: build strong basics and study habits. This is a good time to fix weak areas before they grow.
Classes 9 and 10: subject specialists and board-exam practice become important.
Classes 11 and 12: choose specialists who know both the board syllabus and, if relevant, entrance exams.
On TutorPapa, tutors are subject specialists with at least 2 years of teaching experience, and each profile lists the classes, boards and exams they cover.
How to use the demo class to judge a tutor
Many TutorPapa tutors offer a free first demo, shown by a "Free demo" tag on their profile. Use this checklist:
Did the tutor ask what your child already knows?
Did your child get to try steps on their own?
Were mistakes explained calmly, without making your child feel small?
Did the tutor use your child's textbook or school questions?
Was there a clear plan or homework at the end?
Would your child happily attend another class?
If most answers are yes, you have probably found a good match.
When to change tutors
Give a new tutor about four weeks. If your child still dreads the class, marks are not moving, or the tutor rarely checks homework, speak to the tutor first. If nothing changes, it is reasonable to try someone else. A good fit matters more than loyalty.
How often and how long?
For most school students, one or two sessions a week per subject is enough. Primary children do better with shorter sessions of 30 to 45 minutes. Older students usually manage 60 minutes well; longer sessions for JEE or NEET should include a short break. Before board exams, you may add sessions for a few weeks, then return to the normal rhythm.
Signs the tuition is working
Homework takes less time and causes fewer arguments.
Your child can explain a solved question back to you.
The type of mistakes in school tests is changing.
Your child is willing to attempt harder questions.
The tutor gives you clear, specific feedback, not just "good progress".
Marks often improve last. Confidence and habits usually change first, so watch for those in the first few weeks.
Online tuition also widens your choice. If no strong Accountancy or Physics tutor lives nearby, you can learn from a specialist in another city. Families abroad can find tutors who know CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE. The same checks apply wherever the tutor lives: look at their classes and boards, read learner reviews, and judge the demo class on how much your child actually understood.

Frequently asked questions
For primary classes, one good tutor can often cover all subjects. From Class 8 or 9 onwards, a subject specialist for each weak subject usually works better.
Ask which boards and classes they have taught recently, and check the boards listed on their profile. In the demo, ask them to solve a question from your child’s own textbook.
Whether the tutor asks what your child already knows, lets your child try steps, explains mistakes calmly, and ends with clear homework or next steps.
