Online Tutoring Across Time Zones: How It Really Works
IST never changes its clocks, but your country might. Here is how lesson times line up from the Gulf to North America, and how to avoid missed classes.

When a family in Dubai, London, Toronto or Sydney books a tutor based in India, the first practical question is not about teaching at all. It is about the clock. A lesson that is “after school” for your child might be early morning or late night for the tutor. The good news is that online tutoring across time zones works well once you understand the overlaps, plan around daylight saving changes and agree a few simple rules. This guide walks through exactly that.
The one fact that makes planning easier
India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30 all year. India does not observe daylight saving time, so the tutor’s clock never moves. Any change in the gap between you and your tutor comes from your country changing its clocks, not India’s. Keep that in mind and most scheduling surprises disappear.
Typical overlaps by region
The times below show how a common slot for the student translates to IST. They are worked examples, not rules; individual tutors keep different hours, and some deliberately teach early mornings or late evenings for overseas students.
UAE and the GCC
UAE and Oman (UTC+4, no daylight saving): 5:00 pm in Dubai is 6:30 pm in India. This is close to a perfect match: after school for the child, early evening for the tutor.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain (UTC+3): 5:00 pm locally is 7:30 pm IST. Still very workable on weekdays.
Remember that weekends in the Gulf (Saturday–Sunday in the UAE; Friday–Saturday in some neighbouring countries) may not line up with a tutor’s days off. Confirm which days the tutor works.
United Kingdom
Winter (GMT, UTC+0): IST is 5½ hours ahead. 4:30 pm in London is 10:00 pm in India.
Summer (BST, UTC+1): IST is 4½ hours ahead. 4:30 pm in London is 9:00 pm in India.
Weekday after-school slots are possible with tutors who teach late, but weekend mornings in the UK (for example 10:00 am GMT, which is 3:30 pm IST) are often easier for everyone.
United States and Canada
Eastern time (New York, Toronto): IST is 10½ hours ahead in winter and 9½ in summer. A Saturday 9:00 am lesson in winter is 7:30 pm IST.
Pacific time (California, Vancouver): IST is 13½ hours ahead in winter and 12½ in summer. A weekday 6:00 pm lesson in winter is 7:30 am IST the next day.
North America is the hardest region to match on weekdays. The realistic options are weekend mornings, early-morning lessons before school (US time) with tutors who teach in their evening, or evening lessons in the US with tutors who start early in the morning in India. Ask about this directly in your first message.
Australia
Sydney and Melbourne: IST is 4½ hours behind in winter (AEST) and 5½ behind in summer (AEDT). 5:00 pm in Sydney is 12:30 pm or 11:30 am in India.
Brisbane (no daylight saving): always 4½ hours ahead of IST.
Perth: 2½ hours ahead of IST, so 5:00 pm is 2:30 pm in India.
After-school slots in Australia fall in the Indian daytime, which suits tutors who are free before Indian school hours end.
Daylight saving: the twice-a-year trap
Because the UK, Europe, most of the US and Canada, and south-eastern Australia change their clocks while India does not, your lesson will shift by an hour on the Indian side twice a year. Worse, these countries do not change on the same weekend. In spring the US changes its clocks about two to three weeks before the UK; in autumn the UK changes about a week before the US. If you compare times across several countries, expect the gaps to shift more than once in a few weeks.
Three habits prevent missed lessons:
Agree which clock is fixed. Usually the student’s local time stays the same and the tutor adjusts. Say so in writing.
Put a reminder a week before each change to reconfirm the next lesson in both time zones.
Use a planner tool such as the timeanddate.com Meeting Planner, which adjusts for daylight saving automatically, rather than doing the maths in your head.
How TutorPapa handles time zones
TutorPapa’s live classes and batches are scheduled in IST, and the website also shows the time in your own time zone automatically, as explained in the TutorPapa FAQ. Learners get email reminders before a live class starts. For one-to-one tuition, the lesson time is agreed between you and the tutor, so state your city and time zone clearly from the first message.
A practical way to start is to browse tutors who teach online or to post a tutor request that includes your city, time zone and two or three preferred slots in your local time. Writing “Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5–6 pm Dubai time” is far more useful than “weekday evenings”.
Is a late-night or early-morning lesson a problem?
It can be, for both sides. A tutor teaching at 10:30 pm after a full day may be less sharp; a child logging on at 6:30 am before school may be half-asleep. Some practical checks:
Ask the tutor what their usual teaching hours are, and whether your slot is at the edge of their day.
Keep very early or very late lessons shorter (45 minutes rather than 90).
Prefer weekend slots for longer sessions such as full mock papers or project work.
Watch the first two lessons for energy and focus on both sides, not just content.
Practical setup for cross-border lessons
Connection and devices
A laptop with a stable connection, a headset with a microphone, and a quiet space matter more than any special software. For maths and science, a simple pen tablet or a phone camera pointed at the notebook makes working visible. Test the setup once before the first paid lesson.
Shared materials
Agree one place for notes and homework, such as a shared folder or the platform’s messages, so nothing gets lost in personal chats. This also helps if a lesson is moved because of a time change.
Payments and currency
On TutorPapa, courses show prices in both rupees and US dollars, and the pricing page notes that international cards are accepted. For one-to-one tuition, confirm the fee, currency and payment method with the tutor before lessons begin, and keep payments on the platform where possible so there is a record.
Cancellation rules
Time-zone mix-ups happen. Agree in advance how much notice is needed to move a lesson and what happens if either side misses one because of a clock change. Clear rules prevent awkward conversations later.
Why Indian tutors suit some time zones better than others
Being honest about geography helps you choose. Families in the Gulf, East Africa, South-East Asia and Australia have natural overlap with Indian working hours, so they can usually find tutors for weekday after-school slots. UK families have reasonable overlap, especially at weekends and with tutors who teach in the Indian evening. North American families have the narrowest window and should expect weekend or early/late slots.
What travels well across borders is the teaching itself: many tutors in India teach in English, and subjects like maths, physics, chemistry, coding and English communication rely on methods that are similar worldwide. What needs checking is board-specific experience (Cambridge, IB, AP or a national curriculum), which you should ask about directly.
A simple scheduling checklist
Write your city and time zone in every message to the tutor.
Propose two or three slots in your local time and ask the tutor to confirm in IST.
Agree that the student’s local time stays fixed across daylight saving changes.
Set calendar reminders a week before each clock change.
Keep late or early lessons short, and longer work for weekends.
Review after four weeks: is the slot sustainable for both sides?
With these basics in place, distance stops being the issue, and you can focus on whether the tutor is the right teacher for your child.
Frequently asked questions
No. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, so any change in the gap comes from your country changing its clocks.
The UAE and wider GCC, Asia, East Africa and Australia overlap well with Indian working hours. The UK overlaps partly; the US and Canada usually need weekend or early/late slots.
Live classes are scheduled in IST, and the website also shows the time in your own time zone automatically.
Agree in writing that the student’s local time stays fixed, and reconfirm the next lesson in both time zones a week before each change.
