If you have spent years teaching a subject, you carry something valuable: you know where students get stuck and how to get them unstuck. For a long time, that knowledge reached only the students in your school, coaching centre or neighbourhood. Online teaching changes that. This guide is a practical, step-by-step walk-through of becoming a tutor on TutorPapa, from checking that you are a good fit to handling your first month of students. If you would first like an overview of the ways to teach and what online teaching involves, read Want to Teach Online? Join TutorPapa as a Teacher.

Before you apply: are you a good fit?

TutorPapa is for subject specialists with at least 2 years of teaching experience. That includes school teachers, coaching faculty, subject experts and experienced home tutors. Ask yourself:

  • Which subjects, classes and boards can I teach confidently today?

  • Do I want to teach online, at home in my city, or both?

  • Which days and times can I offer regularly?

  • Am I comfortable on video calls and with basic digital tools?

Clear answers will make your profile much stronger.

Step-by-step: becoming a TutorPapa tutor

Step 1: Sign up

Go to the Become a tutor page and create your tutor account with your name, mobile number, email and a password. Then verify your email.

Step 2: Complete your portfolio

Your portfolio is what parents see. A complete portfolio includes your profile photo, an "about you" section, subjects, classes, boards and exams, city or online, experience, qualifications, a demo video link, availability and bank or UPI details. Your dashboard shows a meter of what is left.

Step 3: Pass the safety checks

Every tutor completes the same checks: ID, qualification certificate, a background check, the safeguarding policy and a short demo or interview. These checks are why parents trust the profiles they see.

Step 4: Go live

Only complete and verified profiles are shown to parents. Once you are approved, your profile appears in the tutor finder, where students and parents search by subject, class, board and city or online.

How to write a profile parents trust

  • Be specific in your headline. "CBSE and ICSE Maths, Classes 9 to 12" tells parents more than "Experienced teacher".

  • Explain how you teach. In two or three sentences, describe how you start with a new student and how you track progress.

  • List only what you teach well. It is better to show three subjects you are strong in than ten you are not.

  • Keep availability accurate. Nothing frustrates a parent more than booking a slot you cannot keep.

  • Stay honest. Do not overstate results or qualifications. Verification checks your documents, and parents notice exaggeration.

Recording a demo video that works

Your demo video is often the first time a parent hears you teach. Keep it simple:

  1. Keep it short, around two to three minutes.

  2. Introduce yourself in a sentence or two, then teach one small idea, such as a concept or one solved question.

  3. Use a quiet room, good light on your face and a clear microphone.

  4. Show your teaching style: how you check that a student has understood.

  5. End by saying which classes, boards and subjects you teach.

Your first month as a tutor

Respond quickly

When a parent or student contacts you, a prompt, polite reply makes a strong first impression.

Make demo classes count

Ask what the student already knows, let them try, explain mistakes calmly and end with a clear next step. Many parents decide after this one class.

Set a goal with each student

Agree on a goal for the first month and review it at the end. Parents value clarity.

Earn honest reviews

Reviews on TutorPapa can only be left by learners. Good, consistent teaching is the only way to build them.

Teaching students worldwide

Because online classes work from anywhere, you can teach students across India and abroad, including Indian families living in other countries. Confirm times in both time zones, ask for the student's exact syllabus, such as CBSE, IB or IGCSE, and keep communication clear and written where possible. If you run live classes, TutorPapa shows each class time in IST and in the student's local time.

Good to know: the Tutor Agreement

When you join, you agree that classes and payments with students introduced by TutorPapa stay on TutorPapa for 12 months. This protects parents, students and tutors, because bookings, reminders and payments are all recorded in one place.

Planning a great first session

Your first paid session sets the tone. A simple 60-minute structure:

  1. 5 minutes: warm-up. Ask what the student enjoys and finds hard.

  2. 15 minutes: a short diagnostic. Two or three questions from earlier classes reveal hidden gaps.

  3. 30 minutes: teach one topic well, with the student trying steps.

  4. 10 minutes: recap, set a small piece of homework and share the plan for the next few weeks.

Send a short note to the parent afterwards with what you found and what you will work on.

Keep improving as a tutor

The best tutors keep learning. Watch a recording of your own class once in a while and notice how much you talk. Try new ways to explain the topics students find hardest. Keep up with syllabus changes from your board. Over time, these small habits make a big difference to your students, and to the reviews they leave.

Finally, be patient with yourself. Your first few online classes may feel different from teaching in a room. Within a few weeks, most experienced teachers find their rhythm, and many find they can give each student more focused attention online than they could in a crowded class.
