Teaching online is no longer a side experiment. Parents across India, and Indian families abroad, now look for good teachers online as a normal part of their child's education. If you are a teacher who knows your subject deeply, online teaching can let you reach students far beyond your own city. This article gives you an honest overview: who TutorPapa is looking for, the ways you can teach, what changes when you teach on a screen, and how payments work. When you are ready to apply, our step-by-step guide Turn Your Knowledge into Opportunity walks you through the process.
Is online teaching right for you?
Online teaching suits teachers who enjoy explaining one idea in several ways, who are comfortable with basic technology, and who can keep a regular schedule. It also suits teachers who want flexibility: a school teacher who wants to teach a few evenings a week, a retired professor who still loves the subject, or a home tutor who wants to reach students outside their neighbourhood.
It is also fair to say what it is not. Online teaching is not instant work. Building a base of students takes time, good demo classes and good reviews. How much you teach depends on your subject, your availability and the demand from students.
Who TutorPapa is looking for
TutorPapa is for subject specialists with at least 2 years of teaching experience. That includes:
School teachers of any subject, from primary classes to Class 12
Coaching faculty for JEE, NEET and other competitive exams
Subject experts in areas like Accountancy, Computer Science or languages
Experienced home tutors who want to teach online too
Teachers familiar with CBSE, ICSE, state boards, IB or IGCSE
Every profile is checked before it goes live: ID, qualification, a background check, a safeguarding policy and a short demo. This is what lets parents trust the tutors they find.
Three ways to teach on TutorPapa
1. One-to-one tuition, online or at home
Students and parents find you in the tutor finder by subject, class, board and city or online. You can teach online to students anywhere, offer home tuition in your city, or both.
2. Live classes and batches
You can schedule live sessions with a set number of seats and a Zoom or Google Meet link. TutorPapa handles bookings and sends students email reminders. Times are shown in IST and in each student's local time, which helps when students join from abroad. See current examples on the live classes page.
3. Recorded courses
If you like planning a full course, you can publish recorded lessons once and students can enrol at any time. Browse the courses page to see how lessons, practice and certificates are presented.
What changes when you teach on a screen
Shorter explanations, more questions
Attention drops faster on a screen. Break explanations into short chunks and ask the student to try a step after each one. "Show me how you would start this" works better than "Do you understand?"
Use a digital whiteboard or a pen tablet
Writing as you explain is still the heart of teaching maths and science. A shared whiteboard, a pen tablet or even a phone camera pointed at your notebook can do the job.
Check understanding visibly
You cannot walk around the room to look at notebooks. Ask students to hold their work up to the camera, share a photo, or solve on the shared board.
Keep parents informed
Parents of school students want to know what is happening. A short message after a few sessions about progress and next steps builds trust. TutorPapa parents can also follow their children's progress reports on their own account.
Your basic online teaching kit
A laptop or desktop with a working webcam
A headset or earphones with a clear microphone
Stable broadband, with mobile data as a backup
A quiet, well-lit space with a plain background
A pen tablet, document camera or whiteboard app for subjects that need writing
You do not need a studio. Clear sound matters more than a perfect picture.
Teaching students outside India
Online classes let you teach students in other countries too, including many Indian families living abroad. A few points help:
Agree times in both time zones, and recheck when other countries change their clocks.
Know the curriculum. A student abroad may follow CBSE, IB, IGCSE or a local system. Ask for the syllabus and be honest about what you have taught before.
Communicate clearly. Simple English, clear written summaries and patience with accents go a long way.

How payments work
Parents and students pay online on TutorPapa by UPI, card, net banking or wallet. Your payouts are sent to your bank account or UPI automatically after the session is completed and a short refund window, so you do not have to chase payments. You can see every payment and payout on your Earnings screen. What you earn depends on the classes you teach; no one can promise a fixed income, and you should be wary of any platform that does.
Common mistakes new online teachers make
Talking too much. Long explanations lose students on a screen. Aim for the student to be doing or speaking for at least half the session.
Skipping the basics check. Starting with the current chapter, without testing earlier concepts, often hides the real problem.
No clear plan. Parents want to know what will be covered in the next few weeks. A simple written plan builds confidence.
Ignoring the camera and sound. A dark room or echoing audio makes even great teaching hard to follow.
Listing too many subjects. Parents trust specialists. Focus on what you teach best.
Avoid these, and your demo classes and reviews will speak for you.
