Parents rarely ask only for a Maths tutor. They ask for a CBSE Class 10 Maths tutor, or an ISC Chemistry tutor, or someone who knows the Maharashtra HSC paper. Board knowledge is what turns a good teacher into the right tutor for a student. TutorPapa matches experienced tutors with students by board, class and subject.
How the main boards differ
CBSE
The most widely followed national board, with NCERT textbooks at its core. Parents expect tutors to know NCERT thoroughly, including in-text questions and exemplar problems, and to follow the current sample papers and competency-based question formats.
ICSE and ISC
The CISCE boards are known for a broad syllabus, detailed English and long, structured answers. Tutors need to teach precise answer writing and full working, and to be comfortable with prescribed literature texts.
State boards
Each state board has its own textbooks, exam pattern and often a choice of medium. Examples include the UP Board, Maharashtra SSC and HSC, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka SSLC and PUC, Telangana, West Bengal, Gujarat and Rajasthan boards. Tutors who teach in the student's medium, whether Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or another language, are especially valuable.
What parents expect from a board tutor
Clear coverage of the textbook, chapter by chapter, matched to the school's timetable.
Practice with past papers and the board's marking scheme.
Help with presentation: diagrams, steps and keywords that examiners look for.
Regular progress updates to parents in the months before the exam.
Our board exam strategy course shows the kind of exam-focused approach families value.
Who can register as a TutorPapa tutor
We keep the bar clear and the same for everyone, because parents trust the tutors they find through us. Board experience counts: tell us which boards, classes and mediums you have actually taught.
Subject specialist: you must be a genuine specialist in the subject or domain you want to teach, not someone willing to cover anything.
At least 2 years of teaching experience: a minimum of two years teaching students, whether in a school, a coaching institute, a college or as a private tutor.
Verification: ID verification, qualification verification and a background verification are completed before your profile goes live, along with agreement to our safeguarding policy.
Demo lesson: a short demo lesson so our team can see how you explain a topic and handle a student's questions.
If you have taught more than one board, list each one, since many families switch boards between Class 10 and Class 11.
Teaching board students at home or online
Home tuition is very common for board students, especially in Classes 9 and 10. Online sessions work well for revision, past-paper practice and for students in towns with few board specialists. You can choose either, or both.
When students switch boards
A growing number of students move between boards, for example from ICSE in Class 10 to CBSE in Class 11, or from a state board school to a CBSE school when the family relocates. These transitions can be hard. Topics are taught in a different order, answer styles change and some content is new. Tutors who understand two or more boards can help students close gaps quickly. If you have taught across boards, describe the combinations you know best. It is one of the most useful things a board specialist can offer, and families going through a switch often look specifically for it.
How registration works
Register on the Become a Tutor page with your name, mobile number and email.
Complete your portfolio: photo, a short note about you, subjects, classes, boards and exams, city or online preference, experience, qualifications, a demo video link and your availability.
Pass the safety checks: ID, qualification and background verification, the safeguarding policy and a short demo lesson.
Go live: once verified, your profile appears in the tutor finder, and you start receiving student requests that match your subjects, classes and location.
After your profile goes live
Keep your availability, subjects and areas up to date from your tutor dashboard, so the requests you receive stay relevant. Respond to new requests promptly, and agree the schedule and goals with the student or parent at the start. Good communication and steady progress are what lead families to recommend a tutor to others.
