Most tutoring in India happens alongside school, and every stage from Class 1 to Class 12 needs a different kind of teacher. A tutor who is brilliant with Class 12 Physics may not be the right person for a Class 2 child learning to read. TutorPapa matches experienced tutors with students at the stage where their teaching is strongest.
What each stage needs from a tutor
Classes 1 to 5: foundations
Parents look for patient tutors who build reading, writing, number sense and good study habits. All-subject tutors are common at this stage, but specialists in early literacy, phonics or primary maths are especially valued.
Classes 6 to 8: building confidence
Subjects separate into Maths, Science, Social Science and languages. Students need help with concepts and with organising their work. Many families start looking for subject-specific tutors here.
Classes 9 and 10: the first board exam
Maths and Science lead the requests, followed by English, Social Science and second languages. Tutors who know the board's marking scheme and sample papers are in demand.
Classes 11 and 12: stream choices
Students in Science, Commerce and Humanities need true specialists: Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology, Accountancy, Economics, Business Studies, History, Political Science, Psychology and more, often alongside entrance preparation.
Subjects you can register for
You can list any school subject in which you are a specialist, including languages such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit and regional languages, Computer Science and Informatics Practices. Parents searching our tutor finder can filter by subject and class, so be specific about the classes you teach best. Our online Mathematics tutors and online Science tutors pages show how subjects appear to families.
Who can register as a TutorPapa tutor
We keep the bar clear and the same for everyone, because parents trust the tutors they find through us. An all-subject primary tutor and a Class 12 Chemistry specialist both qualify, as long as the classes and subjects you list match your real expertise.
Subject specialist: you must be a genuine specialist in the subject or domain you want to teach, not someone willing to cover anything.
At least 2 years of teaching experience: a minimum of two years teaching students, whether in a school, a coaching institute, a college or as a private tutor.
Verification: ID verification, qualification verification and a background verification are completed before your profile goes live, along with agreement to our safeguarding policy.
Demo lesson: a short demo lesson so our team can see how you explain a topic and handle a student's questions.
Home or online for school students
Younger children usually do better with home tuition, where a tutor can sit beside them and keep them focused. From Class 8 onwards, many students are comfortable online, especially for subject-specific help or revision before exams. You can offer one or both.
What the demo lesson looks like for school tutors
For the demo lesson, choose a topic from the class you most want to teach and explain it the way you would to a real student. A primary tutor might teach place value or a short reading passage; a Class 10 tutor might work through a trigonometry problem; a Class 12 tutor might explain a Chemistry concept and then check understanding with a question. We look at clarity, patience, accuracy and how you respond when a student is confused. There is no need for slides or special materials; a notebook, a whiteboard or a shared screen is enough.
How registration works
Register on the Become a Tutor page with your name, mobile number and email.
Complete your portfolio: photo, a short note about you, subjects, classes, boards and exams, city or online preference, experience, qualifications, a demo video link and your availability.
Pass the safety checks: ID, qualification and background verification, the safeguarding policy and a short demo lesson.
Go live: once verified, your profile appears in the tutor finder, and you start receiving student requests that match your subjects, classes and location.
After your profile goes live
Keep your availability, subjects and areas up to date from your tutor dashboard, so the requests you receive stay relevant. Respond to new requests promptly, and agree the schedule and goals with the student or parent at the start. Good communication and steady progress are what lead families to recommend a tutor to others.
