Online tutoring lets a skilled teacher in a small town reach a student in a metro, or a Class 12 student in India reach a specialist hundreds of kilometres away. TutorPapa connects experienced tutors with students who want live, one-to-one or small-group lessons online. This page explains what online teaching with us involves and how to register.
Who you can teach online
Online students come from every stage of learning. Some of the most common groups are:
School students in Classes 1 to 12 across CBSE, ICSE and state boards, often in cities where a suitable home tutor is hard to find.
Entrance aspirants for JEE, NEET, CUET and other exams who want focused doubt sessions alongside coaching.
International curriculum students studying IB, IGCSE and similar programmes, in India and abroad.
Skill learners in spoken English, foreign languages, coding and computer science.
TutorPapa also runs live classes and batches and recorded courses, so experienced tutors can explore group teaching as well as one-to-one sessions.
What a good online setup looks like
You do not need a studio, but students notice the basics. Before your demo lesson, check that you have:
A stable internet connection and a laptop or desktop, ideally with a backup such as a mobile hotspot.
A clear camera and a headset or microphone, in a quiet, well-lit space.
A digital whiteboard, a writing tablet or a document camera for subjects like Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Familiarity with Zoom or Google Meet, screen sharing and sharing notes after class.
Teaching across time zones
Students abroad often want early morning or late evening slots in Indian time. Setting realistic availability in your portfolio helps us send you requests you can actually take. Our blog post on online tutoring across time zones shares practical tips.
Who can register as a TutorPapa tutor
We keep the bar clear and the same for everyone, because parents trust the tutors they find through us. Online teaching has the same standards as home tuition.
Subject specialist: you must be a genuine specialist in the subject or domain you want to teach, not someone willing to cover anything.
At least 2 years of teaching experience: a minimum of two years teaching students, whether in a school, a coaching institute, a college or as a private tutor.
Verification: ID verification, qualification verification and a background verification are completed before your profile goes live, along with agreement to our safeguarding policy.
Demo lesson: a short demo lesson so our team can see how you explain a topic and handle a student's questions.
For online tutors, the demo lesson is also a chance to show how you use your screen, whiteboard and camera.
Online only, or online and home
You can choose to teach only online, or combine online classes with home tuition in your own city. Many tutors start online and add a few home students nearby, or the other way round. If you want to understand how parents weigh the two, our article on online tuition vs home tuition is a useful read.
Making online lessons work
Good online tutors plan a little more than they would at home. Share the plan for the session at the start, keep the student writing or speaking every few minutes, and end with a short summary and practice work. Send notes or a photo of the whiteboard afterwards. For younger children, shorter sessions with more activities hold attention better. With older students, use screen sharing to work through past papers together. Ask parents how they would like progress updates, whether a monthly message or a short call. These small habits are what make families stay with an online tutor for the long term.
How registration works
Register on the Become a Tutor page with your name, mobile number and email.
Complete your portfolio: photo, a short note about you, subjects, classes, boards and exams, city or online preference, experience, qualifications, a demo video link and your availability.
Pass the safety checks: ID, qualification and background verification, the safeguarding policy and a short demo lesson.
Go live: once verified, your profile appears in the tutor finder, and you start receiving student requests that match your subjects, classes and location.
After your profile goes live
Keep your availability, subjects and areas up to date from your tutor dashboard, so the requests you receive stay relevant. Respond to new requests promptly, and agree the schedule and goals with the student or parent at the start. Good communication and steady progress are what lead families to recommend a tutor to others.
